The Lucky Losers
“Cathy Lemons’ strong and crystal clear voice and Phil Berkowitz’ rich and mellow pipes blend together like a match made in heaven.” Greg “Bluesdog” Szalony, Blues Blast Magazine, October 1, 2015 http://www.bluesblastmagazine.com/issue-9-40-october-1-2015
The Lucky Losers are a male/female duet singing team that front a 6 piece band, headed up by Cathy Lemons, a Vizztone recording artist who has been called “the finest light-skinned female blues vocalist in the U.S.!” (Andy Grigg, REAL Blues) and Phil Berkowitz “A top-flight blues vocalist/harmonica player!” (Paul Freeman, San Jose Mercury News). They draw on a wide range of influences including Chicago and Texas blues, Stax/Volt-styled r&b, slinky, greasy New Orleans street funk, plus their own originals.
Their elegantly crafted debut album, “A Winning Hand,” engineered/co-produced by Kid Andersen and released in June of 2015, quickly reached #5 on the Roots Music Report’s “Top 50 Blues Albums” and the song “A Winning Hand” also reached #5 for RMR’s “Top 50 Blues Songs.” It was just ranked at #46 for the entire year’s “Top Blues Albums for 2015.” And it was nominated for a coveted Blues411 “Jimi Award” in the “Best Traditional Blues Album” category while reaching #1 on Blues 411’s MojoWax powered “A Baker’s Dozen.” The Lucky Losers made the cover of the French magazine “Blues and Co.” for the November 2015 issue. Their song “Change in the Weather” was highlighted as a “Bluesbreaker” on Elwood/ Dan Akroyd’s internationally syndicated radio program “TheBluesMobile/Everything Blues.” And globally popular indie sites “The Alternate Root” and “Making a Scene” have hailed it as a great album.
Living Blues, Blues Matters, Blues Blast, Blues Bytes, Elmore Magazine, Classicalite, and Bill Kopp’s Musoscribe all agree that Cathy and Phil are indeed holding a winning hand. In the short year since their formation, they have independently secured performances at countless local festivals, concert series, and clubs, entertaining hundreds of people. Fresh off a national tour in which they performed in 16 venues and in eight states, they are already hard at work on a follow up album, “In Any Town,” slated to be released in the summer of 2016 and produced with Kid Andersen.
Cathy Lemons (vocals), Phil Berkowitz (vocals/harmonica), Chris Burns (keys), Marvin Greene (guitar), Tim Wagar (bass), and Robi Bean (drums).
